Here’s a holiday season “sneak peak” image that shows the practical interior of the upcoming Toyota FJ Cruiser.

The official photo shows designers have carried the tough, straight-forward and functional theme of the exterior into the cabin.

They have created a functional and flexible interior that is ideal for outdoor recreational activities with a dark interior colour scheme that camouflages dirt and easy-to-clean materials.

Seat facings are water repellent and provide good ventilation, while a rubber-like floor surface makes it easier to clean.

The central faceplate on the dash and the door inserts are colour-keyed to the exterior, while large door handles, knobs and dials are designed for easy operation – even when wearing gloves.

Normal seating configuration is for five people, but the rear seats can be folded flat and the seat cushions removed to accommodate extra gear.

The FJ Cruiser pays homage to the LandCruiser FJ40 that began life in the 1960s and forged a formidable "go anywhere" reputation.

While it retains the spirit of the past, FJ Cruiser is totally modern with features – such as air-conditioning, a reverse camera and keyless entry – that might have seemed more at home 40 years ago on the futuristic cartoon series The Jetsons.

FJ Cruiser is due to be launched in Australia in March.

Impressive ground clearance will be a feature of Toyota’s FJ Cruiser’s ability to deliver full-scale off-road driving performance.

The newcomer, due in local showrooms late next month, has the best departure and break-over angles in the Toyota 4WD range – 31 and 29 degrees respectively. Its approach angle of 36 degrees is bettered only by the 70 Series.

Larger angles can allow a vehicle to negotiate steeper climbs or descents without having parts of the vehicle body, such as the bumpers, make contact with the ground.

A vehicle’s break-over angle is particularly important for off-road transitions from a level area into a descent and from a climb onto flat ground.

A good departure angle can enable a driver who has overshot a turn-off on a steep, narrow track to return in reverse, rather than doing a three-point turn.

Minimum under-vehicle clearance of 224mm and an approach angle of 34 degrees contribute to the FJ Cruiser’s off-road prowess, as well as the adoption of 17-inch wheels and short overhangs.

FJ Cruiser’s 200kW, 380Nm 4.0-litre petrol V6 engine, dual-range transfer case and large wheel articulation will add appeal to younger drivers with active lifestyles.

Standard safety features include vehicle stability control, active traction control, anti-skid brakes, six airbags, a reversing camera, rear parking sensors and active head rests for the front seats.
