ALAMEDA, Calif--The U.S. Coast Guard entered one of its newest and most technologically advanced vessels into action during a ceremony here Friday, with the commissioning of the 418-foot National Security Cutter Waesche, a Legend-class vessel replacing antiquated ships from the 1960s.

Equipped with the state-of-the-art command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaisance (C4ISR) equipment, the abilities of the Waesche are part of an interoperability objective that will give the Coast Guard better collaborative interagency capabilities, improving operational readiness and enabling better fulfillment of new multimission roles more effectively.

Designed in accordance with the Coast Guard's expanding roles, the Waesche also possesses a greater ability to launch and recover small boats, helicopters, and eventually unmanned aerial vehicles.

More than 1,000 guests attended the commissioning of the Waesche, the second of eight planned U.S. Coast Guard Cutters on Coast Guard Island here in Alameda, Calif.

Decorating the ship with colorful flags for Friday's ceremony, each representing the alphabet, numbers, or important messages, the system of international maritime signal flags is used to send messages between ships.

The Mk110 57mm gun is the Waesche's main offensive weapon, capable of firing 220 rounds per minute, essentially making it a (very) large-caliber machine gun.

I can honestly say that every day was an adventure and that the Coast Guard truly lives by the motto "Semiper Paratus". It would be like writing about a new car coming out and show pictures of all different parts, but never the whole car. I still don't know what what this new Coast Guard Cutter looks like.
